Mass Incarceration: The Raw Numbers I

This posting as well as the following ones are supposed to give some bakground to the June 18 session of the summer seminar "Live from Death Row" at the English Department of the University of Heidelberg. These cold statistics were prepared by researchers for the United States Justice Department. Here are the U.S. prisoner statistics for 1999. This was the year when the number of incarcerated persons in the United States for the first time surpassed the 2 million mark.
